The Abundant Goodness of God

An exploration of God's provision and protection for those who fear Him, based on Psalm 31:19.

1. The Nature of God's Goodness

1.1 Inherent and Abundant

Verses: Psalm 31:19; James 1:17
  • God's goodness is inherent in His character; it is not something He does, but who He is.
  • Every good and perfect gift comes from Him, demonstrating His constant outpouring of goodness.
  • His goodness is not limited but abundant, exceeding our comprehension.

1.2 Selective and Universal

Verses: Exodus 33:19; Psalm 145:9
  • God's goodness is selective in its manifestation, shown to those He chooses in His mercy.
  • Yet, His tender mercies are over all His works, indicating a general goodness extended to all creation.
  • Understanding this balance helps us appreciate both the universal and personal aspects of His goodness.

2. Fear of the Lord: The Key to Receiving Goodness

2.1 Reverence and Obedience

Verses: Psalm 34:9; Proverbs 19:23
  • Fearing the Lord is not terror, but a reverential awe and respect for His power and holiness.
  • It involves obedience to His commands and a turning away from evil.
  • Those who fear Him lack no good thing, for He provides for their needs.

2.2 Wisdom and Revelation

Verses: Psalm 25:12-14; Psalm 111:10
  • The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, leading to understanding and discernment.
  • It is a fountain of life, turning one away from the snares of death.
  • God reveals His covenant to those who fear Him, granting them special insight and favor.

3. God's Goodness Laid Up: A Future Inheritance

3.1 Beyond Comprehension

Verses: 1 Corinthians 2:9; Romans 8:18
  • God has prepared things for those who love Him that eye has not seen nor ear heard.
  • This speaks of a future inheritance beyond our current comprehension.
  • The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed.

3.2 Eternal Reward

Verses: Revelation 21:4; Revelation 7:17
  • In the new heaven and new earth, God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
  • There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.
  • The Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to fountains of living water.

4. God's Goodness Wrought: Present Manifestations

4.1 Active Provision

Verses: Psalm 23:1-6; Philippians 4:19
  • Even now, God's goodness is actively working in the lives of believers.
  • He provides for our needs, guides us through difficult times, and protects us from harm.
  • We can trust that He will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory.

4.2 Faithful Working

Verses: Romans 8:28; Psalm 84:11
  • God works all things together for good to those who love Him, to those who are called according to His purpose.
  • No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
  • Even in trials and tribulations, we can find evidence of His goodness and faithfulness.
