The Gospel of Peace in Ephesians

An exegetical Bible study on peace in Ephesians.

1. The Foundation of Peace: God's Eternal Plan

1.1 Grace and Peace: An Apostolic Greeting

Verses: Ephesians 1:2
  • Paul's greeting emphasizes grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • This sets the tone for the entire letter, highlighting the source of true peace.

1.2 Predestined for Peace

Verses: Ephesians 1:4-5
  • God, manifested in Christ, chose us before the foundation of the world.
  • This predestined plan was to bring us into adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, to Himself.

2. The Means of Peace: Redemption and Revelation

2.1 Redemption and Forgiveness

Verses: Ephesians 1:7
  • We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
  • This redemption is the basis for our peace with God.

2.2 The Mystery Revealed

Verses: Ephesians 1:9-10
  • God has made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Christ.
  • This mystery is the unification of all things in Christ, both in heaven and on earth.

3. The Reality of Peace: Unity in Christ

3.1 Christ Our Peace

Verses: Ephesians 2:14-15
  • Christ Himself is our peace, who has made both groups into one and has broken down the barrier of the dividing wall.
  • He abolished the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace.

3.2 Reconciliation Through the Cross

Verses: Ephesians 2:16-17
  • Through the cross, Christ reconciled both groups to God in one body, thereby killing the hostility.
  • He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.

3.3 Access to the Father

Verses: Ephesians 2:18-19
  • Through Christ, we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
  • Consequently, we are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.

4. Living in Peace: Practical Application

4.1 Walking in Peace

Verses: Ephesians 4:1-3
  • Paul exhorts believers to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which they have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.
  • They are to be diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4.2 Maintaining Unity

Verses: Ephesians 4:4-6
  • There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
  • This unity is the foundation for maintaining peace within the body of believers.

5. Protecting Peace: Spiritual Warfare

5.1 The Armor of Peace

Verses: Ephesians 6:11, 14-15
  • Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
  • Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

5.2 Spiritual Warfare

Verses: Ephesians 6:16-18
  • Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
  • This spiritual warfare is essential for maintaining peace in the face of opposition.
