The Name of Jesus

An exploration of the significance and power of the name of Jesus in Scripture.

1. The Saving Name

1.1 Salvation Through His Name

  • Jesus' name means 'The Lord Saves,' revealing His divine purpose.
  • Salvation is exclusively found in the name of Jesus; there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved.

1.2 Jesus: The Only Way

Verses: John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5
  • Jesus declared Himself to be the only way to the Father.
  • There is one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus.

2. The Authoritative Name

2.1 Baptism in Jesus' Name

Verses: Acts 2:38; Acts 10:48
  • Apostolic baptism was consistently administered in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
  • This practice reflects the authority and power vested in His name.

2.2 Identification with Christ

Verses: Acts 19:5; Romans 6:3
  • Baptism in Jesus' name signifies our identification with His death, burial, and resurrection.
  • It is a public declaration of our faith and commitment to Him.

3. The Powerful Name

3.1 Power Over Sickness and Infirmity

  • Believers are promised the ability to cast out demons and heal the sick in Jesus' name.
  • The apostles performed miracles by the power of Jesus' name, demonstrating its efficacy.

3.2 A Name Above All Names

  • The name of Jesus is supreme and holds authority over all creation.
  • Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

4. The Living Name

4.1 Living in His Name

  • Everything we do, in word or deed, should be done in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to God through Him.
  • Our lives should reflect the character and teachings of Jesus.

4.2 Prayer in His Name

  • We are encouraged to ask anything in Jesus' name, and it will be done for us, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
  • Praying in Jesus' name acknowledges His authority and our dependence on Him.
