1. The Source of Temptation

1.1 The Devil's Influence

  • The devil seeks to deceive and lead us astray.
  • He uses cunning and lies to tempt us.
  • We must be vigilant and resist his influence.

1.2 Our Own Desires

  • Temptation arises from our own sinful desires.
  • These desires war against our spirit.
  • We must crucify the flesh and walk in the Spirit.

2. The Nature of Temptation

2.1 Appeals to the Flesh

  • It can manifest as lust, gluttony, or greed.
  • We must not set our minds on the things of the flesh.

  • It can manifest as a desire for recognition or power.
  • We must humble ourselves and seek God's will.

  • Temptation can serve as a test of our faith.
  • It reveals the strength of our commitment to God.
  • Enduring temptation produces spiritual maturity.

3. Overcoming Temptation

3.1 Resisting the Devil

Verses: James 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-18
  • We must submit to God and resist the devil.
  • We must put on the whole armor of God.
  • Prayer and spiritual warfare are essential.

3.2 Fleeing from Sin

Verses: 1 Corinthians 6:18; 2 Timothy 2:22
  • We must avoid situations that lead to temptation.
  • We must flee from youthful lusts.
  • We must pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

3.3 Seeking God's Help

  • God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear.
  • He provides a way of escape from every temptation.
  • We can find grace and mercy in our time of need.

4. The Example of Jesus

  • Jesus was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin.
  • He overcame temptation by quoting Scripture.
  • His example shows us how to resist the devil.

4.2 Jesus' Prayer Life

  • Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray.
  • He sought strength and guidance from the Father.
  • Prayer is essential for overcoming temptation.
