How Death is Identified as the Final Enemy

An exploration of the biblical understanding of death as an adversary, its origin, its defeat through the work of Jesus Christ, and the ultimate hope of its eradication.

1. The Introduction of Death

1.1 Death as a Consequence of Sin

Verses: Genesis 2:17; Romans 5:12; Romans 6:23
  • God's original warning about the consequence of disobedience.
  • Sin entered the world through one man, bringing death to all.
  • Spiritual death precedes physical death, separating humanity from God.

1.2 Death as an Enemy

Verses: 1 Corinthians 15:26; Hebrews 2:14-15
  • Scripture explicitly calls death 'the last enemy'.
  • It holds humanity in bondage through fear.
  • Death is an unnatural intruder, not part of God's original design.

2. Christ's Victory Over Death

2.1 Jesus' Incarnation to Destroy Death

Verses: Hebrews 2:14-15; John 1:14; 1 John 3:8
  • God manifested in flesh to experience humanity and death.
  • Through His own death, He rendered powerless the one who had the power of death.
  • His purpose was to destroy the works of the devil, including death.

2.2 The Cross and Resurrection as Triumph

Verses: Colossians 2:13-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 2:24
  • Jesus' death on the cross paid the penalty for sin, disarming spiritual principalities.
  • His resurrection proved His victory over the grave and death's power.
  • God raised Him up, having loosed the pains of death.

2.3 The Authority of Jesus Over Death

Verses: Revelation 1:18; John 11:25-26; John 5:28-29
  • Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades.
  • He is the resurrection and the life, offering life to those who believe.
  • He has the power to call forth the dead from their graves.

3. The Promise of Resurrection

3.1 The Hope of the Believer

  • Believers have a living hope in the resurrection of the dead.
  • Our mortal bodies will be transformed into glorious, immortal bodies.
  • The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus, will also give life to our mortal bodies.

3.2 The Order of Resurrection

Verses: 1 Corinthians 15:20-23; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52
  • Christ is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
  • At His coming, those who belong to Him will be raised.
  • The dead in Christ will rise first, followed by living believers.

3.3 The Nature of the Resurrected Body

Verses: 1 Corinthians 15:42-44; 1 Corinthians 15:53-54
  • The perishable will put on the imperishable, and the mortal will put on immortality.
  • It is sown in corruption, raised in incorruption; sown in dishonor, raised in glory.
  • The physical body will be transformed into a spiritual body, fit for eternity.

4. Death's Final Annihilation

4.1 Death Cast into the Lake of Fire

Verses: Revelation 20:14; Revelation 21:4
  • Death itself will be destroyed, cast into the lake of fire.
  • This signifies its complete and utter defeat, never to have power again.
  • There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain in the new heaven and new earth.

4.2 A New Heaven and New Earth

Verses: Revelation 21:1-5; Isaiah 25:8
  • God will create a new dwelling place where righteousness dwells.
  • He will wipe away every tear, and death will be swallowed up forever.
  • This is the ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive plan.

4.3 The Eternal Reign of Christ

Verses: 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; Revelation 11:15
  • After all enemies, including death, are destroyed, Christ will deliver the kingdom to God.
  • He must reign until He has put all enemies under His feet.
  • His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, with no end to His dominion.
