Understanding the Holy Spirit

1. The Holy Spirit: The One God Manifest

1.1 The Spirit is the one God

Verses: Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 45:5; John 4:24; 2 Corinthians 3:17
  • God is Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
  • The Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
  • There is one God, and there is none other but he.

1.2 The Spirit's attributes are God's attributes

Verses: Psalm 139:7-10; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11
  • The Spirit is omnipresent, filling all space and being everywhere at once.
  • The Spirit is eternal, having no beginning and no end.
  • The Spirit is omniscient, knowing the deep things of God.

1.3 The Spirit is not a separate person

Verses: Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:29; 1 Timothy 2:5
  • The Lord our God is one Lord.
  • There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
  • The Spirit is the Spirit of the one God, not a distinct entity.

2. The Holy Spirit in Creation and Revelation

2.1 The Spirit's role in creation

Verses: Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4; Psalm 104:30
  • The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, bringing order out of chaos.
  • The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.
  • When God sends forth His Spirit, they are created, and He renews the face of the earth.

2.2 The Spirit inspires Scripture

Verses: 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 3:16
  • Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

2.3 The Spirit reveals truth

Verses: John 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14
  • The Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth, speaking not of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear.
  • The Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
  • Spiritual things are spiritually discerned, understood only through the Spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit in Salvation

3.1 The Spirit convicts of sin

Verses: John 16:8
  • The Spirit reproves the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
  • The Spirit brings an awareness of our need for salvation.

3.2 The Spirit regenerates and gives new birth

Verses: John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5
  • Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
  • The washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost saves us.
  • The Spirit gives spiritual life, making us new creations.

3.3 The Spirit empowers for holy living

Verses: Romans 8:4; Galatians 5:16; Galatians 5:22-23
  • We are to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, fulfilling the righteousness of the law.
  • If we live in the Spirit, we should also walk in the Spirit.
  • The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance—is produced in us.

4. The Experience of the Holy Spirit

4.1 The promise of the Spirit

Verses: Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:38-39
  • God promised to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh.
  • The promise of the Holy Ghost is to us, and to our children, and to all that are afar off.

4.2 Receiving the Spirit

Verses: Acts 2:4; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 19:1-6
  • Believers are filled with the Holy Ghost, often accompanied by speaking with other tongues.
  • The Holy Ghost falls on those who hear the word, causing them to speak with tongues and magnify God.
  • The Holy Ghost is received through faith and obedience, sometimes with the laying on of hands.

4.3 The initial evidence of the Spirit

Verses: Acts 2:4; Acts 10:46; Acts 19:6
  • Speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance is the initial sign of receiving the Holy Ghost.
  • This experience is a supernatural manifestation, not learned language.
  • It serves as a witness and confirmation of the Spirit's indwelling.

4.4 The indwelling Spirit

Verses: 1 Corinthians 6:19; Romans 8:9
  • Our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in us, given by God.
  • If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
  • The Spirit resides within believers, guiding and empowering them.

5. Gifts and Ministry of the Spirit

5.1 Diverse manifestations of the Spirit

Verses: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
  • There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
  • The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
  • These gifts include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

5.2 Purpose of spiritual gifts

Verses: Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Corinthians 14:12
  • Gifts are for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.
  • Believers should seek to excel in gifts that edify the church.
  • The gifts are given to build up and strengthen the community of believers.

5.3 The Spirit empowers ministry

Verses: Acts 1:8; Luke 4:18
  • Believers receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon them, enabling them to be witnesses.
  • The Spirit of the Lord anoints individuals for specific ministries, such as preaching the gospel.
  • The Spirit provides the divine ability to carry out God's work effectively.
