Christian Liberty

An exploration of the freedom believers have in Christ.

1. Freed from the Law's Condemnation

1.1 The Law's Purpose

Verses: Romans 3:20; Galatians 3:24
  • The law reveals sin, making us aware of our need for a savior.
  • It served as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.

1.2 Christ Fulfills the Law

Verses: Matthew 5:17; Romans 10:4
  • Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.
  • Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

1.3 No Longer Under Condemnation

Verses: Romans 8:1; Galatians 5:1
  • There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
  • Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.

2. Liberty from Sin's Dominion

2.1 Dead to Sin

Verses: Romans 6:2; Romans 6:11
  • We died to sin; how can we live any longer in it?
  • Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2.2 Newness of Life

Verses: Romans 6:4; 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • We are buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
  • If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2.3 Yielding to God

Verses: Romans 6:13; Romans 6:22
  • Do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
  • Having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

3. Freedom to Serve

3.1 Serving in Love

Verses: Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16
  • Use your liberty as an opportunity to serve one another in love.
  • Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.

3.2 Bondservants of Christ

Verses: 1 Corinthians 7:22; Romans 1:1
  • He who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave.
  • Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.

4. The Spirit of Liberty

4.1 Where the Spirit Is

Verses: 2 Corinthians 3:17; John 8:36
  • Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
  • Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

4.2 Led by the Spirit

Verses: Galatians 5:18; Romans 8:14
  • If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
  • As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
