The Manifestation of the Spirit

1. The Promise of the Spirit

1.1 Fulfillment of Prophecy

Verses: Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:16-18
  • The outpouring of the Spirit was foretold by the prophets.
  • This promise was not just for a select few, but for all who would believe.
  • The manifestation of the Spirit is a sign of the last days.

1.2 Jesus's Assurance

Verses: John 14:16-17; John 16:7
  • Jesus promised to send another Comforter, the Spirit of truth.
  • The Spirit would abide with believers forever.
  • It was expedient for Jesus to depart so the Spirit could be sent.

2. The Spirit's Indwelling

2.1 The Baptism of the Spirit

Verses: Acts 2:4; Acts 10:44-46; Acts 19:6
  • Speaking in other tongues is the initial, unmistakable sign of the Spirit's infilling.
  • This experience empowers believers for service.
  • It is a distinct experience from water baptism.

2.2 The Spirit's Presence

Verses: 1 Corinthians 6:19; Romans 8:9
  • Our bodies become temples of the Spirit.
  • The Spirit dwells within every believer.
  • Having the Spirit is evidence of belonging to Christ.

2.3 The Spirit's Guidance

Verses: John 16:13; Romans 8:14
  • The Spirit guides us into all truth.
  • He leads those who are sons and daughters of God.
  • We must be sensitive to the Spirit's leading.

3. The Spirit's Power

3.1 Gifts of the Spirit

Verses: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
  • The Spirit distributes gifts to each believer as He wills.
  • These gifts are for the edification of the church.
  • Examples include: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

3.2 Fruit of the Spirit

Verses: Galatians 5:22-23
  • The fruit of the Spirit is the manifestation of Christ's character in our lives.
  • It is evidence of a Spirit-filled life.
  • The fruit includes: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

4. The Spirit and the Godhead

4.1 One God, One Spirit

Verses: Deuteronomy 6:4; Ephesians 4:4-6
  • There is one God, and the Spirit is the fullness of that one God manifested.
  • The Spirit is not a separate person but the very essence of God.
  • The Spirit is the power and presence of God in the world.

4.2 The Spirit in Christ

Verses: Isaiah 11:2; Luke 4:18-19
  • The Spirit rested upon Jesus without measure.
  • Jesus was anointed by the Spirit to preach the gospel, heal the sick, and deliver the oppressed.
  • The same Spirit that was in Christ is available to believers today.
