The Great Commission: A Study for Women
Exploring the call to discipleship and evangelism in Matthew 28:16-20, focusing on the role of women in fulfilling the Great Commission.
1. Understanding the Authority of Jesus
1.1 All Power is Given
Verses: Matthew 28:18
- Jesus declares that all power (authority) in heaven and earth has been given to Him.
- This authority is not delegated, but inherent in His divine nature as the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
- Recognizing His supreme authority is the foundation for effective discipleship.
1.2 The Source of His Authority
Verses: John 5:26-27
- The Father has granted the Son to have life in Himself.
- He has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
- This authority is not separate from the Father, but a manifestation of the one God in Christ.
2. The Command to Make Disciples
2.1 Going and Teaching
Verses: Matthew 28:19
- The command is to 'go,' implying active participation and movement.
- We are called to 'teach' or 'make disciples' of all nations, not just converts.
- This involves imparting knowledge and guiding others into a relationship with Jesus.
2.2 Baptism in His Name
Verses: Acts 2:38; Acts 10:48
- Baptism is to be administered in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
- This aligns with the apostolic practice and emphasizes the singular name of the Savior.
- It is an act of obedience and identification with His death, burial, and resurrection.
2.3 Teaching Obedience
Verses: Matthew 28:20
- Disciples are to be taught to observe all things that Jesus commanded.
- This involves a lifelong process of learning and applying His teachings to every area of life.
- Obedience demonstrates our love for Him and confirms our discipleship.
3. The Promise of His Presence
3.1 I Am With You Always
Verses: Matthew 28:20
- Jesus promises His constant presence with those who obey the Great Commission.
- This presence empowers and sustains us in our efforts to make disciples.
- We are not alone in this task; He is with us to the end of the age.
3.2 The Comforter
Verses: John 14:16-18
- Jesus promised to send another Comforter, the Spirit of truth, to abide with us forever.
- He will not leave us comfortless; He will come to us.
- This indwelling presence is the key to fulfilling the Great Commission effectively.
4. Women's Role in the Great Commission
4.1 Empowered by the Spirit
Verses: Acts 1:14; Acts 2:17-18
- Women were present in the upper room, praying and receiving the Holy Spirit.
- The outpouring of the Spirit was for both men and women, empowering them for ministry.
- Women are equally called and equipped to participate in the Great Commission.
4.2 Examples of Women in Ministry
Verses: Acts 18:26; Romans 16:1-2
- Priscilla, along with Aquila, instructed Apollos in the way of God more perfectly.
- Phoebe is commended as a servant of the church and a helper of many.
- These examples demonstrate the diverse ways women can contribute to the spread of the gospel.
