The Significance of the Holy Temple
A study of the significance of the Holy Temple in the Old and New Testaments.
1. The Temple in the Old Testament
1.1 The Temple as a House of Sacrifice and Presence
Verses: Leviticus 17:11; Exodus 25:8
- It was the designated place for sacrifices and offerings to atone for sins.
- It served as a physical representation of God's presence among His people.
1.2 The Holy of Holies and the Ark of the Covenant
Verses: Hebrews 9:3-5; Leviticus 16
- The Ark of the Covenant, containing the Ten Commandments, was housed in the Holy of Holies.
- The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of the people.
2. The Temple in the New Testament
2.1 Jesus as the Temple
Verses: John 2:19-21; Colossians 2:9
- Jesus referred to His body as the temple that would be destroyed and raised up in three days.
- This signified that Jesus Himself is the ultimate dwelling place of God.
2.2 Believers as Living Stones and the Church as the Temple
Verses: 1 Peter 2:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 2:21-22
- Through faith in Jesus, believers become living stones built into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood.
- The church, as the body of Christ, is now the temple of the Spirit.
3. The Temple and Access to God
3.1 The Tearing of the Veil
Verses: Matthew 27:51; Hebrews 10:19-22
- The tearing of the veil in the temple at Jesus' crucifixion symbolized the removal of the barrier between God and humanity.
- Access to God is now available to all through Jesus.
3.2 The Temple as a Place of Prayer and Worship
Verses: Luke 19:46; Hebrews 13:15
- The temple was a place of prayer and worship.
- Believers are called to continually offer spiritual sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving.
4. The Temple in Eternity
4.1 The Temple in the New Jerusalem
Verses: Revelation 21:22; Revelation 22:3-5
- The New Jerusalem, described in Revelation, has no temple because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
- This signifies the ultimate and complete presence of God in the eternal state.
