How to Pray

This Bible study outline provides guidance on how to approach God in prayer, understanding His nature, the principles of effective prayer, and how to cultivate a consistent prayer life.

1. Understanding Who We Pray To

1.1 The One God Revealed in Jesus Christ

Verses: John 14:8-9; Colossians 2:9; Isaiah 9:6
  • Jesus is the Father manifested in flesh, the visible image of the invisible God.
  • All the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him bodily.
  • He is the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.

1.2 Praying to the Father in Jesus' Name

Verses: John 14:13-14; John 16:23-24
  • We address God as Father, recognizing His role as Creator and Sustainer.
  • We pray 'in Jesus' name' acknowledging His authority and singular deity.
  • This signifies praying by His power and according to His will, as He is the one God.

1.3 The Role of the Holy Spirit in Prayer

Verses: Romans 8:26-27; Ephesians 6:18; Galatians 4:6
  • The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, dwelling within us.
  • He helps us in our weaknesses and intercedes for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
  • Praying in the Spirit involves yielding to His guidance and utterance, allowing Him to pray through us.

2. The Foundation of Effective Prayer

2.1 Faith in God's Ability and Willingness

Verses: Mark 11:24; Hebrews 11:6; James 1:6-7
  • We must believe that God exists and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
  • Doubt hinders prayer; we must ask in faith, nothing wavering.
  • Faith is essential for receiving from God and trusting in His divine power.

2.2 A Right Relationship with God

Verses: Psalm 66:18; 1 John 3:22; Isaiah 59:1-2
  • Unconfessed sin separates us from God and hinders our prayers.
  • Obedience to God's commands is crucial for answered prayer, as we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
  • Repentance and forgiveness open the way to God, restoring our fellowship with Him.

2.3 Humility and Sincerity

Verses: James 4:6; Luke 18:13-14; Psalm 51:17
  • God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

  • Humility acknowledges our dependence on Him and His supreme authority.
