A guide to understanding and practicing prayer according to biblical principles.

1. Understanding Who We Pray To

1.1 The One True God

Verses: Isaiah 45:5; Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 Timothy 2:5
  • There is only one God, and His name is Jesus.
  • Jesus is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit manifested in different ways.
  • All prayer should be directed to Jesus Christ, the Lord.

1.2 Jesus Christ: Our Access to God

Verses: John 14:6; Ephesians 2:18; Colossians 2:9
  • Jesus is the only mediator between God and humanity.
  • Through Him, we have direct access to the Father, who is Jesus Himself.
  • In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

2. The Foundation of Prayer: Faith and Righteousness

2.1 Praying in Faith

Verses: Mark 11:24; James 1:6-7; Hebrews 11:6
  • Believe that you receive when you pray.
  • Doubt hinders effective prayer.
  • Faith is essential for pleasing God and receiving from Him.

2.2 Living a Righteous Life

Verses: James 5:16; 1 John 3:22; Proverbs 15:29
  • The fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much.
  • Obedience to God's commands opens the door for answered prayer.
  • God hears those who fear Him and do His will.

2.3 Repentance and Forgiveness

Verses: Psalm 66:18; Matthew 6:14-15; 1 John 1:9
  • Unconfessed sin can hinder our prayers.
  • We must forgive others to be forgiven and heard by God.
  • Confess sins to God, and He is faithful to forgive.

3. How to Pray: Practical Steps

3.1 Praying in Jesus' Name

Verses: John 14:13-14; John 16:23-24; Colossians 3:17
  • All prayers should be offered in the authority and power of Jesus' name.
  • Praying in His name means praying according to His will and character.
  • This is our access and assurance that God hears us.

3.2 Praying with Thanksgiving and Praise

Verses: Philippians 4:6-7; Colossians 4:2; Psalm 100:4
  • Begin and end prayers with gratitude for God's goodness.
  • Praise acknowledges God's sovereignty and power.
  • Thanksgiving shifts our focus from problems to God's ability.

3.3 Praying with Persistence and Fervency

Verses: Luke 18:1-8; Romans 12:12; Ephesians 6:18
  • Do not give up; continue to pray until you see results.

  • Prayer requires consistent effort and dedication.

3.4 Praying in the Spirit (Speaking in Tongues)

Verses: 1 Corinthians 14:14-15; Romans 8:26-27; Jude 1:20
  • Praying in tongues is praying by the Holy Spirit, often beyond our understanding.
  • It edifies the individual and allows the Spirit to intercede perfectly.
  • This is a spiritual language given by God for direct communication.

4. What to Pray For

4.1 God's Will and Kingdom

Verses: Matthew 6:9-10; 1 John 5:14-15; Luke 11:2

  • Bring all your needs, big or small, before God.
  • He cares for you and wants to provide for your daily sustenance.
  • Approach His throne with confidence to find grace and help.

4.3 Intercession for Others

Verses: 1 Timothy 2:1-2; James 5:16; Ephesians 6:18
  • Pray for leaders, family, friends, and those in need.
  • Intercessory prayer is a powerful act of love and service.
  • Pray for the lost and for the spread of the Gospel.
