Faith and Works

An exploration of the relationship between faith and works in the life of a believer.

1. Salvation by Grace Through Faith

1.1 The Gift of Grace

Verses: Ephesians 2:8-9
  • Salvation is a gift from God, not earned through our efforts.
  • It is through faith that we receive this gift.

1.2 The Insufficiency of Works Alone

Verses: Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:16
  • Following the law perfectly does not justify us before God.
  • Our own righteousness is insufficient.

2. Works as the Fruit of Faith

2.1 The Evidence of True Faith

Verses: James 2:17; James 2:26
  • Faith without action is dead and unproductive.
  • True faith is demonstrated by our deeds.

2.2 Obedience as an Expression of Love

Verses: Matthew 7:21; John 14:15
  • Professing faith is not enough; obedience is essential.
  • Love for God is shown through keeping His commandments.

2.3 Walking in His Ways

Verses: 1 John 2:3-6
  • We know Him if we keep His commandments.
  • Walking as He walked is evidence of genuine faith.

3. Practical Expressions of Faith

3.1 The Importance of Obedience to the Apostolic Doctrine

Verses: Acts 2:38
  • Repentance, baptism in Jesus' name, and receiving the Holy Spirit are essential steps.
  • These are acts of obedience demonstrating faith.

3.2 Living a Life of Holiness

Verses: Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:15-16
  • Holiness is necessary to see the Lord.
  • We are called to be holy in all our conduct.

4. The Synergy of Divine Grace and Human Effort

4.1 God's Work in Us and Our Response

Verses: Philippians 2:12-13
  • We must work out our salvation with fear and trembling.
  • It is God who works in us, both to will and to do His good pleasure.

4.2 Adding to Our Faith

Verses: 2 Peter 1:5-11
  • We are to add to our faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.
  • Diligence in these areas makes our calling and election sure.
