Understanding the Book of Revelation

A study of the book of Revelation, focusing on its key themes and prophecies.

1. The Revelation of Jesus Christ

1.1 Author and Authority

Verses: Revelation 1:1-3; Revelation 22:18-19
  • The book is a revelation *of* Jesus Christ, not just *about* Him.
  • It is divinely inspired and carries the full weight of God's authority.
  • Adding to or subtracting from its words carries severe consequences.

1.2 The Identity of Jesus

Verses: Revelation 1:8; Revelation 1:17-18; Revelation 22:13
  • Jesus identifies Himself as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
  • He is the one who was dead, but is alive forevermore, holding the keys of death and hell.
  • These declarations affirm His eternal nature and supreme authority.

2. The Church Age

2.1 The Seven Churches

Verses: Revelation 1:4; Revelation 1:11; Revelation 2-3
  • The seven churches represent different periods or types of churches throughout history.
  • Each church receives a specific message of commendation, rebuke, and exhortation.
  • These messages provide valuable lessons for believers today.

2.2 Promises to Overcomers

Verses: Revelation 2:7; Revelation 2:11; Revelation 3:5; Revelation 3:21
  • Each message to the churches includes a promise to those who overcome.
  • These promises highlight the rewards of faithfulness and perseverance.
  • They encourage believers to remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

3. The Great Tribulation

3.1 The Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls

Verses: Revelation 6; Revelation 8-9; Revelation 16
  • These judgments represent increasing levels of God's wrath poured out on the earth.
  • They depict widespread suffering, destruction, and chaos.
  • These events serve as a warning of the consequences of rejecting God.

3.2 The Antichrist and the False Prophet

Verses: Revelation 13; Revelation 19:20
  • The Antichrist is a powerful figure who opposes God and deceives the world.
  • The False Prophet supports the Antichrist and performs miracles to mislead people.
  • Together, they establish a system of control and persecution against believers.

4. The Return of Christ and the Millennium

4.1 The Second Coming

Verses: Revelation 19:11-16; Revelation 1:7
  • Jesus will return in power and glory to judge the earth.
  • He will defeat the Antichrist and establish His kingdom.
  • Every eye will see Him, and those who pierced Him will mourn.

4.2 The Millennial Reign

Verses: Revelation 20:1-6
  • Christ will reign on earth for a thousand years with His saints.
  • Satan will be bound, and there will be a time of peace and righteousness.
  • This period fulfills God's promises to Israel and the nations.

5. The Eternal State

5.1 The Great White Throne Judgment

Verses: Revelation 20:11-15
  • All the unsaved dead will be judged according to their works.
  • Those whose names are not found in the Book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire.
  • This is the final judgment and the ultimate separation of the righteous and the wicked.

5.2 The New Heaven and New Earth

Verses: Revelation 21-22
  • God will create a new heaven and a new earth, free from sin and suffering.
  • The New Jerusalem will be the dwelling place of God and His people.
  • There will be no more death, sorrow, or pain, and God will wipe away all tears.
