Searching the Scriptures but Missing the Savior: A Study on John 5:39-40

1. The True Witness of the Scriptures

1.1 The Scriptures Point to One Savior

  • Searching the scriptures is profitable only when it leads to the recognition of Jesus as that Savior.

2. The Barrier of Spiritual Blindness

  • The leaders stumbled because they could not see the Father's presence dwelling fully within Jesus.

  • Jesus came in His Father's name, demonstrating that the name of Jesus is the supreme name of God.
  • Rejecting the name and person of Jesus is a rejection of the Father who sent Him.

4. The Heart's Refusal to Submit

  • The leaders' refusal to come to Jesus proved they did not truly love the God they claimed to worship.
  • To love God is to embrace His self-revelation in the person of Jesus Christ.

4.2 The Absolute Necessity of Faith in His Identity

  • Eternal life is only found by coming directly to Jesus and believing in His true identity.
  • Believing that Jesus is the 'I Am' is the essential requirement for salvation.
