Saved By Grace Through Faith
A study of Ephesians 2:8-9, focusing on grace, faith, and works in salvation.
1. Understanding Grace
1.1 God's Unmerited Favor
Verses: Romans 3:24; Titus 3:5
- Grace is God's unmerited favor, a gift freely given.
- It is the source of our salvation, not something we earn.
1.2 Grace and Holy Living
Verses: Titus 2:11-12; Romans 6:1-2
- Grace empowers us to live a life pleasing to God.
- It is not a license to sin, but a call to holiness.
2. The Role of Faith
2.1 Faith as Trust
Verses: Hebrews 11:1; Romans 10:17
- Faith is the instrument by which we receive God's grace.
- It is a confident trust in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.
2.2 Faith and Obedience
Verses: James 2:17-18; John 14:15
- Faith is demonstrated through obedience to God's Word.
- True faith produces a changed life.
3. Works and Salvation
3.1 Works Cannot Save
Verses: Ephesians 2:9; Romans 4:4-5
- Works do not earn salvation; salvation is a free gift.
- Ephesians 2:9 clarifies that salvation is 'not of works, lest any man should boast.'
3.2 Works as Evidence of Salvation
Verses: Ephesians 2:10; Titus 3:8
- Good works are the result of salvation, not the cause.
- We are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
4. The Godhead and Salvation
4.1 One God, Diverse Manifestations
Verses: Acts 2:38; 2 Corinthians 5:19
- Salvation is entirely the work of the one God, manifested as Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit in regeneration.
- It is through the name of Jesus Christ that we receive forgiveness and the gift of the Spirit.
4.2 Essential Ordinances
Verses: Acts 10:48; Acts 19:5-6
- Baptism in water by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ is essential for obedience to the Gospel.
- Receiving the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in other tongues, is the initial sign of the Spirit's infilling.
