Prayer and the Shema
A Bible study outline focusing on prayer, informed by the Shema.
1. Understanding the Shema
1.1 The Oneness of God in the Shema
Verses: Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5; 1 Corinthians 8:6
- The Shema declares God's absolute unity: 'The Lord our God, the Lord is one.' (Deuteronomy 6:4)
- This oneness emphasizes that God is not a plurality of persons, but a single, indivisible being.
- Understanding this unity is foundational to effective prayer, as it directs our worship to the one true God.
1.2 Jesus and the Shema
Verses: Mark 12:29; Colossians 2:9; John 14:9
- Jesus affirmed the Shema (Mark 12:29), highlighting its importance.
- He taught that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, reflecting the total devotion due to the one God.
- Jesus, being the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9), embodies the one God revealed in the Shema.
2. Prayer and the One God
2.1 The Nature of Prayer
Verses: Philippians 4:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Matthew 6:6
- Prayer is communication with God, expressing our needs, gratitude, and adoration.
- The Shema reminds us that we are addressing the one God, the source of all blessings.
- Effective prayer requires a recognition of God's sovereignty and our dependence on Him.
2.2 Praying in Jesus' Name
Verses: John 14:13-14; Acts 3:6; Colossians 3:17
- Praying 'in Jesus' name' acknowledges His role as the manifestation of God and our mediator.
- It signifies that our prayers are aligned with God's will and are presented through His divine authority.
- This is not a mere formula, but a recognition of Jesus' identity as the one God revealed in flesh.
3. Faith and Obedience
3.1 Faith in Prayer
Verses: Hebrews 11:6; James 1:6-7; Mark 11:24
- Faith is essential for effective prayer, believing that God hears and answers.
- The Shema reinforces faith by affirming God's singular power and ability to fulfill His promises.
- Doubt hinders prayer, while unwavering faith unlocks God's blessings.
3.2 Obedience and Prayer
Verses: 1 John 3:22; John 14:15; Psalm 66:18
- Obedience to God's Word demonstrates our love and reverence for Him.
- The Shema calls for total devotion to the one God, which includes obedience to His commandments.
- Obedience aligns our will with God's, making our prayers more effective.
