  • Jesus warned that the world would hate those who follow Him.
  • Persecution is a normal experience for the believer.
  • Opposition confirms our identification with Christ.

1.2 Forms of Persecution

Verses: Matthew 5:11; 1 Peter 4:14
  • Reproach can manifest as verbal abuse and slander.
  • Persecution may involve social ostracism and discrimination.
  • It can even escalate to physical harm and imprisonment.

2. The Reason for Persecution

2.1 Identification with Jesus

Verses: Matthew 10:22; John 15:21
  • We are hated because of our association with the name of Jesus.
  • The world rejected Jesus, and it will reject those who represent Him.
  • Our lives reflect the character and teachings of Jesus, which challenges the world.

2.2 The Offense of the Cross

Verses: Galatians 5:11; 1 Corinthians 1:23
  • The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.

  • Great is our reward in heaven for enduring persecution.
  • Our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed.
  • We share in Christ's sufferings, and we will also share in His glory.

3.3 A Testimony to Others

Verses: Philippians 1:12-14; 1 Peter 3:16
  • Persecution can advance the gospel as others see our steadfastness.
  • Our good conduct in the face of opposition can silence the critics.
  • We can be a living witness to the power and grace of Jesus.

4. Responding to Persecution

4.1 Rejoicing in Suffering

  • Jesus commands us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, and pray for those who persecute us.
  • We overcome evil with good.
  • Our love demonstrates the character of Jesus.

4.3 Trusting in God's Protection
