Christian Liberty

An exploration of the freedom believers have in Christ.

1. Freed from the Law's Condemnation

1.1 The Law's Purpose

Verses: Romans 3:20; Galatians 3:24
  • The law reveals sin, making us aware of our need for a savior.
  • It served as a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.

1.2 Christ Fulfills the Law

Verses: Matthew 5:17; Romans 10:4
  • Jesus did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.
  • Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

1.3 No Longer Under Condemnation

Verses: Romans 8:1; Galatians 5:1
  • There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
  • Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.

2. Liberty from Sin's Dominion

2.1 Dead to Sin

Verses: Romans 6:2; Romans 6:11
  • We have died to sin; how can we live any longer in it?
  • Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2.2 Slaves to Righteousness

Verses: Romans 6:18; Romans 6:22
  • Having been set free from sin, we become slaves of righteousness.
  • Now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.

2.3 Walking in the Spirit

Verses: Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:4
  • Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
  • That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

3. Freedom to Serve

3.1 Love as the Motive

Verses: Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16
  • Through love, serve one another.
  • Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.

3.2 Serving in Newness of Spirit

Verses: Romans 7:6; 2 Corinthians 3:6
  • We should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
  • The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

4. The Proper Use of Liberty

4.1 Not a License for Immorality

Verses: Galatians 5:13; 1 Corinthians 6:12
  • Do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh.
  • All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.

4.2 Edifying Others

Verses: 1 Corinthians 10:23; Romans 14:19
  • All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
  • Let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
