1. The Nature of Our Deliverance

1.1 Dead to the Law

  • We have died to that which held us captive.
  • This death is a spiritual reality through our union with Christ in His death.
  • The law no longer has dominion over us.

1.2 Released from Obligation

  • We are not under law but under grace.
  • The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free.
  • We are released from the penalty and power of sin.

2. Serving in Newness of Spirit

2.1 A Transformed Motivation

  • We serve not in the old way of a written code.
  • Our service is motivated by the Spirit.
  • The Spirit gives life, while the letter kills.

2.2 A Living Relationship

Verses: John 14:26; Romans 8:4
  • The Spirit guides us into all truth.
  • We walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
  • The righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us through the Spirit.

3. The Purpose of the Law

3.1 Revealing Sin

Verses: Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7
  • Through the law comes knowledge of sin.
  • The law defines sin and makes us aware of our transgression.
  • It shows us our need for a savior.

3.2 Pointing to Christ

Verses: Galatians 3:24; Romans 10:4
  • The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ.
  • Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
  • The law prepared the way for the gospel.
