Called Out of the World: A Life of Separation and Consecration

This study explores the biblical call for believers to live distinctly from the world, embracing a life set apart for God's purposes and reflecting His nature.

1. Understanding the Call to Separation

1.1 The Divine Initiative

Verses: 2 Corinthians 6:17; John 15:19
  • God initiates the call to come out and be separate.
  • We are chosen by Him, not by our own merit.
  • Separation from the world is God's design for His people.

1.2 What 'The World' Represents

Verses: 1 John 2:15-17; James 4:4
  • The world's system and values are opposed to God's will.
  • Its desires, lusts, and pride are fleeting and not from the Father.
  • Friendship with the world is spiritual enmity with God.

1.3 The Purpose of Separation

Verses: 1 Peter 2:9; Deuteronomy 14:2
  • To be a peculiar people, a holy nation, God's own possession.
  • To declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness.
  • To be holy in all our conduct, just as He is holy.

2. The Nature of Our God and His Call

2.1 The One True God

Verses: Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5-6; Mark 12:29
  • There is one God, and there is no other beside Him.
  • He is the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of all.
  • The unity of God is absolute and foundational to our faith.

2.2 God Manifested in Christ

Verses: John 14:9; Colossians 2:9; 1 Timothy 3:16
  • The fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ bodily.
  • Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God.
  • God Himself was manifest in the flesh for our salvation.

2.3 The Name of the Lord

Verses: Acts 2:38; Acts 4:12; Philippians 2:9-11
  • Salvation is found in no other name given among men.
  • The name of Jesus is exalted above every other name.
  • Baptism is commanded in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins.

2.4 The Indwelling Spirit

Verses: Acts 2:4; John 14:16-17; Romans 8:9
  • The Spirit received by believers is God Himself dwelling within us.
  • The Spirit empowers us for holy living and spiritual service.
  • We are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is God's presence in us.

3. Living a Consecrated Life

3.1 Renewing the Mind

Verses: Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:22-24
  • Do not conform to the patterns and philosophies of this world.
  • Be transformed by the renewing of your mind through God's Word.
  • Put off the old self and put on the new self, created in righteousness.

3.2 Ethical and Moral Purity

Verses: 1 Peter 1:15-16; Hebrews 12:14
  • Be holy in all your conduct, just as God who called you is holy.
  • Pursue peace with all people and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
  • Flee from all forms of immorality and ungodliness.

3.3 Separation in Conduct and Speech

Verses: Ephesians 5:3-4; Colossians 3:8
  • Avoid unwholesome talk, crude joking, and foolish chatter.
  • Let no corrupt communication proceed from your mouth, but only what is edifying.
  • Put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy communication.

3.4 Separation in Entertainment and Associations

Verses: Psalm 1:1; 1 Corinthians 15:33
  • Do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly or stand in the way of sinners.
  • Evil company corrupts good habits and godly character.
  • Choose your companions and entertainment wisely, aligning with God's standards.

4. The Blessings and Responsibilities of the Called

4.1 Divine Protection and Provision

Verses: Psalm 91:1-2; Matthew 6:33
  • Those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High find refuge and protection.
  • When we seek God's kingdom first, all our needs will be provided.
  • God faithfully provides for those who are set apart for Him.

4.2 Power for Witnessing

Verses: Acts 1:8; Matthew 5:14-16
  • We receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us to be His witnesses.
  • Believers are the light of the world, a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.
  • Our separated lives should shine before men, glorifying our Father in heaven.

4.3 Eternal Hope and Reward
