Understanding Death in Light of Scripture

1. The Reality of Death
1.1 The Origin of Death
Verses: Genesis 2:17; Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
- Death entered the world through disobedience.
- Sin is the sting of death.
- Through one man's sin, death spread to all mankind.
1.2 The Universality of Death
Verses: Hebrews 9:27; Ecclesiastes 3:20; Psalm 89:48
- It is appointed for man to die once.
- All go to one place; all are from the dust, and to dust all return.
- No one can deliver their soul from the power of the grave.
2. The Hope of Resurrection
2.1 Victory Over Death Through the Son
Verses: John 11:25-26; 1 Corinthians 15:54-55; Revelation 21:4
- Belief in the Son brings eternal life.
- Death is swallowed up in victory.
- There will be no more death, sorrow, or pain in the new creation.
2.2 The Resurrection and Transformation
Verses: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52; Philippians 3:20-21
- The dead in the Messiah will rise first.
- We shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.
- Our lowly body will be transformed to be like his glorious body.
3. The Judgment After Death
3.1 The Future Resurrection of All
Verses: John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; Daniel 12:2
- All who are in the graves will hear his voice and come forth.
- There will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
- Some will awake to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
3.2 The Consequences of Rejecting the Son
Verses: Matthew 25:46; Revelation 20:11-15; 2 Thessalonians 1:9
- The wicked will go away into everlasting punishment.
- Anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
- The wicked will be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord.
4. Overcoming Death Through Faith
4.1 Receiving Eternal Life
Verses: Romans 6:23; John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10
- The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.
- Whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
- Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart, and you will be saved.
4.2 The Path to Salvation
Verses: Acts 2:38; John 14:6; Acts 4:12
- Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
- Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
