The Faith

A study of the Christian faith.

1. Understanding Faith

1.1 The Definition of Faith

Verses: Hebrews 11:1
  • Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
  • It is the confident assurance that what God has promised is true and will come to pass, even when we cannot see it with our physical eyes.

1.2 The Source of Faith

Verses: Romans 10:17
  • Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • Continual exposure to the Word of God is essential for building and maintaining strong faith.

1.3 Faith and Action

Verses: James 2:14-26
  • Faith is not passive; it requires action.
  • We demonstrate our faith through obedience to God's commands and by living a life that reflects His character.

2. The Foundational Elements of Faith

2.1 Faith in Jesus Christ

Verses: Acts 2:38; John 14:9
  • Faith in the one true God, manifested as Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit in His continuing activity.
  • This faith acknowledges His name, which is Jesus Christ.

2.2 Repentance

Verses: Acts 3:19; 2 Corinthians 7:10
  • Repentance is a change of mind and heart, turning away from sin and toward God.
  • It is a necessary step in receiving forgiveness and experiencing salvation.

2.3 Water Baptism

Verses: Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-4
  • Water baptism by immersion is an act of obedience and identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • It is administered in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.

2.4 The Holy Spirit

Verses: Acts 2:4; Acts 1:8
  • The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father, evidenced by speaking in other tongues.
  • It empowers believers for service and witness.

3. The Power of Faith

3.1 Overcoming Obstacles

Verses: Hebrews 11:30; Matthew 17:20
  • Faith enables us to overcome obstacles and challenges in life.
  • It gives us the courage to step out in obedience, even when we don't see the way forward.

3.2 Receiving Healing

Verses: James 5:15; Mark 5:34
  • Faith is essential for receiving healing and wholeness.
  • We must believe that God is able and willing to heal us, and then act on that belief.

3.3 Answered Prayer

Verses: Mark 11:24; John 14:13-14
  • Faith is the key to answered prayer.
  • We must believe that God hears and answers our prayers according to His will.

4. Maintaining Faith

4.1 Nurturing Faith

Verses: Ephesians 2:8; Romans 10:17
  • Faith is a gift from God, but it must be nurtured and developed.
  • We can strengthen our faith through prayer, studying the Word, and fellowship with other believers.

4.2 Overcoming Doubt

Verses: Matthew 14:31; James 1:6
  • Doubt and unbelief can hinder our faith.
  • We must resist these negative influences and choose to focus on God's promises.
